Serving St. Louis for More than 80 Years
A Family Tradition — Three Generations in the Making
Ryan Matheny grew up in the heating and cooling business. He remembers riding along in the service truck with his father’s installers and service technicians when he was a kid. Eventually he graduated to driver and assistant, shadowing on projects big and small. After receiving a business degree from Lindenwood University and his master HVACR technician certification from Ranken Technical College, he went on to perform every job at the company, from office manager to field dispatcher to technical and service manager. Nobody knows the heating and cooling industry better than Ryan.
Today, Matheny Heating and Cooling works on the leading edge of climate control
technology. They install state-of-the-art systems, including high-efficiency air conditioning and heating systems that provide balanced climate control and comfort throughout your home. They also install air purification systems that use high intensity UVC light to remove over 99% of contaminants, including bacteria, viruses, mold and fungi on surfaces and in the air. The company recently added advanced heat pump technology to their portfolio, becoming one of the leading installers of high efficiency heat pump systems in the St. Louis area. And they’re also your go-to-source for home and business automation systems.
A Legacy is Born
Matheny Heating and Cooling was founded by O.R. (Bob) Matheny in 1942. Bob launched the business servicing refrigerators and coal stoker heating systems, serving the growing city of St. Louis with just one service truck. His business grew quickly as he developed a reputation for honesty and exceptional customer service, two qualities that have remained at the heart of the business ever since. By the time Bob retired in 1985, his service fleet included over a half dozen vehicles and 12 technicians, allowing the company to extend its service area from the city into the western suburbs.
Carrying on the Tradition
Following Bob Matheny’s retirement, he turned the business over to his sons, Tom and Rob Matheny. The brothers continued to expand the business, adding emerging technologies, like ductless systems, steam boilers, and high efficiency systems. They also updated their fleet of vehicles and began hiring trained and certified technicians, as the HVAC was becoming increasingly professionalized. Even as they sought to modernize the company, they maintained the core Matheny values of honesty and customer service, building on the reputation their father had developed. As word spread about their exceptional work, so did their service area. Their location in Olive Boulevard in University City was ideal for allowing them to efficiently serve the growing western metropolitan area.
The Next Generation
In 2018, Rob Matheny retired and Tom Matheny became the sole owner and CEO. The company had continued to grow and Tom asked his son Ryan to serve as president, with daughter Robin Matheny Ford becoming Vice President. Just three years later, Tom Matheny passed away unexpectedly. Although it was a surprise and a difficult time for the family, the company was not unprepared, as Tom had been planning to retire and had established a succession plan. Now, Ryan and Robin are leading the organization into the next exciting phase of its history, as the third generation of the family extends their 80-year legacy of outstanding service to their customers and their community.
Today, Matheny Heating and Cooling has a staff of 16 and serves the entire metropolitan St. Louis region with the same level of integrity and commitment to service their family has always been known for. The company consistently earns the American Standard Customer Care Dealer badge, reserved for those businesses that provide the highest level of customer service and product knowledge. And Matheny’s has a long history of giving back to the community through organizations like Stray Rescue, the St. Louis Crisis Nursery, the Junior League of St. Louis, Autism Speaks, Disabled Athlete Sports Association, Heat Up St. Louis, and the Archdiocese of St. Louis, among many others. They also work with St. Louis and and St. Charles counties to provide low-income families with new equipment in their homes through a grant program.
